Why convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is Apple's video format. iPhones, Macs and many cameras record MOV files, but some Windows computers, Android phones, TVs and websites cannot play them – especially when the video is stored in HEVC (H.265).
MP4 with H.264 video is the most widely supported video format. If your MOV already contains H.264 video, it is moved into MP4 in seconds without any quality loss; otherwise it is converted to H.264.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose quality?
If the video inside the MOV is H.264, no – the picture is copied as it is. HEVC videos are re-encoded with a high quality setting, so the difference is very hard to see.
Why does my iPhone video not play on Windows?
Newer iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) by default. Windows often needs an extra paid extension for HEVC. Converting to MP4 (H.264) solves this.
How long does it take?
H.264 videos usually take only seconds. HEVC or 4K videos need to be re-encoded and can take a few minutes.
Is the sound kept?
Yes. The sound is kept, or converted to AAC if needed so that the MP4 plays everywhere.
